Faith Community Health System encourages residents to get vaccinated early and stay healthy all winter
JACKSBORO, Texas (October 24, 2025) – As cooler temperatures arrive and families begin spending more time indoors, Faith Community Health System (FCHS) is reminding North Texas residents to protect themselves and their loved ones by getting a flu shot. The influenza virus spreads quickly, especially during the late fall and winter months, and can lead to serious illness, missed workdays, and even hospitalization.
“The flu is one of those health challenges we know is coming every year,” said Frank L. Beaman, CEO of Faith Community Health System. “While we can’t stop the virus from circulating, we can absolutely reduce the impact it has on our families and community. A flu shot is the simplest, most effective step you can take to stay healthy this season.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), everyone six months of age and older should receive an annual flu vaccine. Because flu viruses change from year to year, new vaccines are developed annually to target the strains most likely to spread. Getting vaccinated early helps the body build up immunity before flu activity reaches its peak.
“The flu can take anyone by surprise,” said Jennifer Archer, DO, Family Medicine physician at Faith Community Rural Health Clinic. “People may feel fine one day and be very sick the next. We encourage everyone—especially young children, adults over 65, and those with chronic conditions—to get vaccinated as soon as possible. It’s an easy way to prevent unnecessary illness.”
Flu activity across Texas typically begins to rise in October and often lasts well into spring. Since it takes about two weeks for the body to develop full protection after receiving a flu shot, now is the perfect time to act. Dr. Archer explained that even individuals who rarely get sick should still take precautions. “The flu is unpredictable,” she said. “Each season is different, and even healthy people can experience serious symptoms. Getting vaccinated protects not only yourself but those around you who may be more vulnerable.”
Faith Community Health System offers both standard and high-dose flu vaccines, ensuring that people of all ages have access to the appropriate protection. The high-dose vaccine, formulated specifically for adults 65 and older, triggers a stronger immune response to help reduce the risk of severe complications.
Appointments for flu shots are available through any of the Faith Community Rural Health Clinics across Jack, Wise, Young, and Montague counties https://fchtexas.com/clinics/. Most insurance plans cover the cost of annual flu vaccines, and affordable self-pay options are available for individuals without coverage.
Beaman emphasized that getting vaccinated is also a simple act of community care. “When one person gets vaccinated, it helps prevent the flu from spreading to others,” he said. “That means fewer sick days, fewer missed school days, and a healthier community overall. We all have a role to play in protecting one another.”
In addition to vaccination, health officials recommend continuing good hygiene habits such as frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when ill. While these steps help reduce transmission, they are most effective when combined with vaccination.
Dr. Archer added that many patients are surprised by how much better they feel during flu season once they begin getting vaccinated each year. “We often hear from patients who say, ‘I wish I’d done this sooner,’” she said. “Once they realize how simple it is and how much healthier they feel, they make it part of their regular health routine.”
Faith Community Health System providers encourage residents to schedule their flu shots now and to use the opportunity to review their overall wellness with their healthcare provider. Annual exams provide a chance to discuss other preventive steps such as blood pressure checks, diabetes screenings, and updating routine vaccinations.
“Healthcare is about more than treating illness,” Dr. Archer said. “It’s about prevention and making small, smart choices that improve your quality of life. A flu shot is one of those easy steps that can have a big impact. We want everyone in our region to enjoy the season ahead without the setback of a serious illness.”
