Alcohol without Overindulging – Start with Dry January

Office parties, family gatherings, nights out with friends – it seems that so many of our social activities throughout the year revolve around food and drinks. While most of us are able to raise a glass without issue, others may find social and work events can bring undue stress when it comes to trying to navigate managing alcohol safely and responsibly.

People drink to excess for a variety of reasons. Maybe a cocktail or two helps you to relax and be more sociable at gatherings with family, friends or coworkers. Perhaps you’re missing a friend or relative that has moved far away or has passed, and a drink helps to ease that pain and loneliness. Or, maybe you are a regular drinker, who is happy to embrace any celebration with extra enthusiasm, consuming more than usual.

As we wrap up the holidays, it may even be easy to chalk up a bit of overindulgence to the season. That being said, the new year is a time for new beginnings. And, whether you are a resolution maker or not, now is a great time to create a go-forward strategy for self-control in 2024.

In fact, you may want to give yourself a bit of a new year challenge. Consider taking on Dry January! For the next month, say “no” to alcohol and “yes” to embracing a new start!

Ways to Limit Drinking and Still Have a Great Time

You’ve heard the expression “everything in moderation.” right? Many people have no problem when it comes to consuming alcohol in moderation. A glass or two of wine at dinner, a cocktail at the office holiday party, maybe a mimosa at brunch are all reasonable opportunities to imbibe. But, what do we do when we’re faced with an open bar that’s pouring an unlimited amount of our favorite single malt scotch and craft tequila? And beer, right?

Some strategies to adopt to assist in limiting consumption

Buddy System – Buddy up with a pal and make a plan to keep tabs on each other during an event. No, you don’t need “Big Brother” watching. However, having a plan for the evening and a friend who is keeping an eye on you – and vice versa – can help you stick to your guns when it comes to how much might be too much.

Alternate Drinks – Sip a cocktail or have a beer. Then, switch to a soft drink or water. Your friends, family and host will never notice, nor will they question what’s in your glass. And, you’ll help to stave off that morning-after hangover, if you stay hydrated.

Celebrate in Creative Ways – There are lots of opportunities to spend time with family and friends that don’t involve eating and drinking.

Stay Busy – Often, overeating and drinking too much are a result of being bored or lonely. Fill your calendar with activities that keep your hands and your mind busy.
